KARACHI: The administrator of the Karachi South district municipal corporation on Thursday presented Rs3.33 billion budget for the year 2016-17 with a surplus of over Rs2.87 million.

In his budget speech, DMC Administrator Naeem Sindho urged the Sindh government to give DMC`s share of the OZT besides additional funds so that more development work could be undertaken. He said the DMC could not make timely payment to employees and K-Electric during the current year as less fund had been received from the Sindh government.

He said the DMC would spend over Rs2.13 billion on salaries, while over Rs320 million had been allocated for contingencies, Rs478million for maintenance, Rs6.5 million for natural calamities and environmental pollution and over Rs260 million for development works.

He added that Rs125 million had been allocated to clear outstanding dues.

The official said that DMC would generate over Rs598 million from its own resources. He said it expected to get over Rs2.5 billion from the Sindh government. He urged the government to give the proposed OZT share to the DMC as well as some additional fund so that the various departments including education and health, which had been devolved to it from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, could be taken care of properly. He added that the DMC would also require around Rs100 million for the solid waste management that was being outsourced.
