ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly will meet on Monday evening for its monsoon session after an extended summer break. The lower house last met on June 22, when it passed the federal budget for the Knancialyear2016-17.

According to orders of the day, the main agenda item will be the presentation of a motion by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Sheikh Aftab Ahmad, to start mandatory discussion on the annual presidential address.

At the start of every parliamentary year, the president addresses a joint sitting of parliament, which remains under discussion in subsequent sessions, while the house takes up routine business.

Besides the routine agenda, which includes a couple of calling-attention notices, the presentation of a few standing committee reports and introduction of bills, lawmakers are likely to take up important issues which took place while the house was in recess.

Opposition lawmakers belonging to the PTI will speak on the Panama Papers issue by using the point of order.

With the PTI`s announcement tolaunch a countrywide movement for accountability from Aug 7, its MNAs will want to speak on the issue. The PPP is also likely to join a discussion on the Panama Papers commission, since the government has so far shown its reluctance to agree to opposition-proposed terms of reference.

Lawmakers are also expected to discuss the cybercrime bill, which of late has remained in the news for putting in place draconian scrutiny measures in an attempt to curtail freedom of expression for Internet users.

The Senate sent the bill back to the National Assembly with around 50 amendments last week and the current sitting of the house is likely to take up the bill in coming days.

The replacement of the Sindh chief minister, the pending extension of Rangers` stay and powers in Sindh and the arrest of MQM mayoral candidate Waseem Akhtar and other provincial party lawmakers are some of the issues lawmakers from different parties will certainly debate.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif`s continued absence from the country between May 22 and July 9 will also attract the attention of opposition lawmakers, who will press for his presence in the house.
