QUETTA: A campaign to create awareness among mothers about breastfeeding will be launched in Balochistan from Monday (today)as part of the International Breastfeeding Week.
This was announced by Dr Ali Nasir Bugti, the director of the health department`s nutrition cell, at a press conference here on Sunday. Officials of the United Nations Children`s Fund (Unicef) were present.
He said that breastfeeding provided more protein to toddlers and could save mothers from cancer.
During the week-long campaign, he said, mothers would be informed about the importance of breastfeeding through seminars, press conferences and dissemination of global breastfeeding massages.
In Balochistan, he said, up to 16.1 per cent children were hit by malnutrition and the height of 52pc of them could not grow as per standard whereas 49pc women suf fered from anaemia. He said the health department in collaboration with Unicef had launched different programmes in the province to curb malnutrition and anaemia among children and mothers.
