LAHORE: Six people involved in injuring three members of two dengue surveillance teams have been arrested.
Two members of a surveillance team were injured by the residents of a union council of Aziz Bhatti Town on Sept 28 while another was injured the following day in Gulberg.
`The district health authority initiated legal proceedings and also started departmentalinquiry soon af ter the matter came to the fore,` the district health authority`s Chief Executive Officer Dr Muhammad Saeed Akhtar told Dawn on Saturday.
Comprising the district health officer (Preventive) and the district programme coordinator of the Dengue Control Programme, a committee had been constituted to probe into the incidents.
`We have also requested the police high-ups to ask the policemen on patrol duty and of ficials of the Dolphin Force to be more vigilant in the areas where our surveillance teams will be working, added Dr Akhtar.Meanwhile, an official of the Dengue Control Programme said some youths in the Aziz Bhatti Town had attempted to tease the women members of the surveillance team.
`The male members of the team reprimanded the youth who got infuriated and resorted to fisticuffs. As a result, Hafiz Nauman and Muhammad Naveed of the team got minor injuries. They were discharged from the hospital after first-aid, added the official.
A Ghalib Market police of ficial said the Gulberg incident seemed to be the outcome of some personal grudge.
`Initial investigations reveal that the dengue team member and the accused are linked. They used to frequent a roadside eatery in Gulberg Main Market two weeks before this incident.
A health department spokesman termed both the incidents unfortunate.
He said dengue surveillance would continue in the vulnerable areas all over Punjab.
He appealed to the people to cooperate with the teams as the season was suitable for the growth of dengue larva.
