Governor directed to chalk out plan for VC`s recovery

PESHAWAR, Oct 31: The Peshawar High Court on Thursday directed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor to convene a meeting of officials concerned and chalk out a plan for the recovery of Peshawar`s Islamia College University vice-chancellor Ajmal Khan, who was kidnapped by militants over three years ago.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan and Justice Qaiser Rasheed fixed Dec 10 for next hearing with the direction that details of the meeting to be convened by the governor and any development in the case should be submitted to the court.
It also sought details about what steps the government had so far taken for recovery of the VC as his kidnapping had created unrest and sense of insecurity among the teaching community in the province.
The court directed that the governorshould convene a meeting of high-ups, including the provincial home secretary, additional chief secretary of Fata Secretariat, political agents of North and South Waziristan agencies and the parliamentarians belonging to the two agencies.
The political agent of South Waziristan, Islam Zeb, North Waziristan assistant political officer Zaheeruddin Babar and MNAs Mohammad Nazeer Khan, Ghalib Khan and Jamaluddin Khan appeared before the bench and stated that it would be appropriate that a high-level meeting was held for discussing the issue to ensure safe recovery of theVC.
Mr Ajmal was abducted on Sept 7, 2010 along with his driver on way to office from his residence here in Professors Colony. Later, some of his video footages surfaced which showed that he was in custody of militants who had put forwardcertain demands to the government for his release.
Deputy attorney general Mohammad Iqbal Mohmand had sent an application to the PHC chief justice through the human rights cell, requesting to take a suo motu notice of the issue as almost three years had passed, but the provincial government did not take any step for the recovery of Mr Ajmal.
Mr Mohmand stated that he had filed the application as an individual and not as DAG, as Ajmal Khan was a thorough gentleman and respected by all because of his reputation.
He stated that a video footage of Mr Ajmal was released about which a story appeared in local newspapers on July 7, 2013 wherein he had requested the chief justice and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor and chief minister to take interest in his release from Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
