Adopt professional way to restore religious monuments: UK scholar

LAHORE: Eminent scholar and historian from the UK Bobby Singh Bansal said on Monday that a professional approach was the need of the hour in preserving and restoring the religious monument.
`Whenever there is any work related to restoration or preservation of monuments, a professional approach must be adopted,` he said while speaking at a conference titled `The Sikh Monuments in Pakistan`, organized by the Punjab University`s Pakistan Study Centre.
Mr Bobby Singh in his keynote speech highlighted the multifaceted historical significance of Lahore.
He threw light on various Sikh monuments located across Pakistan. He elaboratedthe historicalcontextsandthe present condition of monuments.
He also spoke about the architectural dimensions of the Sikh monuments especially those belonging to Maharaja Ranjeet Singh`s rule in Punjab. He highlighted various aspects of the governance and rule of the Maharaja. `The focus of the preservation work should be on to maintain the originality of artifacts,` he added.
Dr Pritpal Virdee stressed the need for young generation to know about the rich heritage of Punjab.
She also emphasized the need for the change of attitudes and behaviourstowards sanctity of heritage in whole South Asian region. `Along with monuments, the cultural practices must be preserved,` she added.
Faculty members and students of the Pakistan Study Centre and various other departments of the Punjab University attended the lecture which was concluded with a lively question-answer session.
Pakistan Study Centre director Prof Dr Mussarrat Abid and Dr Amjad Abbas Magsi also spoke.
