Reforming beggars

2015-12-01
BEGGING is assuming an alarming proportion in our country. The number of beggars is increasing rapidly. No market, street, road and garden is free of beggars.

They pester you at your home, follow you to your office and worry you at bus stop.

If you do not pay them, they curse you.

Some of them are in perfect health and are strong. They beg because they don`t want to work hard or are forced by someone to do so. There are some who are suffering from some highly infectious diseases.

Begging should be abolished by law.

Able-bodied beggars should be made to work on fixed wages in factories, institutions or workhouses. Children begging in the streets should be enrolled in schools.

They should not be forced to adopt the profession oftheir parents.

For others who are unable to do any work, shelters should be opened where they could be fed and clothed at government expense. The public should be called upon to contribute towards their maintenance.

Those beggars who suffer from infectious diseases should not be allowed to spread diseases by moving around in the streets or lying on roadsides. They must be sent to hospitals for treatment. The government must take action on this issue.
