Signal-free project
2015-12-01
APROPOS the news item on Nov 23. It is good to hear that the first phase of signalfree corridor from Zero Point to Faizabad is nearing completion. Now it is time for the city fathers to sit and do some brainstorming before they venture out on a similar project, which is most likely to be the section between Zero point and Jinnah Avenue.
The question is whether the Capital Development Authority having financial constraints, afford the luxury of fiveinterchanges on a stretch of four kilometeres. (Jinnah Avenue, Zero point, I/8 crossing, Faizabad and one under consideration).
Nowhere in any developed country have I seen such a large number of interchanges at such short distances on the same road.
One has to travel miles together to find one, to negotiate a turn. To resolve such issues, civic bodies have a full-fledged traf fic engineering department, which examines every aspect of projects before giving the go-head signal. I wonder if we have one at the CDA.
Talking about a signal-free corridor from Zero Point to Rawat, one fails to comprehend why the twin cities cannot have a by-pass or a Ring Road to ease the traffic on the existing road, when other small towns have such arrangements.
Commuters on the expressway, which is often blocked or clogged, have to undergo a nightmare on a daily basis, with heavy traffic moving in parallel with you during rush hours. To overcome traffic congestion and pollution in Delhi, trucks are not allowed to enter the city during day time.
Why can`t we do this in Islamabad? Muhammad K. Sufi Islamabad
