VC`s humiliation

2015-12-01
THIS refers to Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan`s statement (Nov 23) in which he slammed the execution of two political leaders in Bangladesh, regretting that Pakistan `could do nothing for those whose fault was that they remained loyal to Pakistan and supported a democratic and constitutional government 45 years ago`.

He called the execution a `violation of human rights and an act below morality`.

Ironically, the minister and the government he is representing are apparently unaware of human rights violation in their own backyard. A classic case is that of Dr S.K. Algama, former vice-chancellor of Bahauddin Zakariya University, who has been presented in courtin handcuf fs like hardened criminals even though no charges have been framed as yet.

He is the scion of the noted Dhaka Nawab family whose contribution to the creation of Pakistan and whose loyalty to the country have no parallel and which produced leaders like Khwaja Nazimuddin and Khwaja Khairuddin. In his own capacity, Dr Algama is an eminent educationist who also served as the country`s ambassador to Yemen.

His case was referred to NAB by the Punjab Education Department for investigation into alleged misuse of power mere investigation, mind you no charges. At the end of his term as VC on Oct 16, he was arrested without any warrant and taken to court handcuffed. Around 40 law-enforcement personnel had raided the VC house and manhandled everyone aroundeventhoughtherewasno resistance. Why this insult and humiliation? The minister called the executions a part of `policy of taking revenge.` Is the humiliation of a highly respectable member of society in the name of `investigation`not a reflection of the government`s policy of revenge? Who will give Dr Algama bacl< the respect and honour he and his elders had enjoyed all these years? Zakir Abbasi Chicago, USA
