Fighting ATM frauds

2018-01-02
MODERN technology in banking for the convenience of depositors is fraught with certain risks. During the preceding week, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has noticed with concern that the customer`s information on debit cards of a bank was compromised by hackers through skimming to create its clones which were used to withdraw depositors` money from various locations within and outside the country.

Until Dec 5, nearly 300 customers had confirmed the disputed transactions. The estimated damage to the bank concerned was Rs.10.2 million. The bank then took several immediate actions to determine and limit the impact of such transactions on customers. It blocked all the identified debit cards that were suspected to be misused and quarantined the ATMs used in the hacking activity.

In this connection, customers should take certain precautions. If possible, use ATMs in an inside location. Before you insert your card in an ATM, put your hand on the slot and `wingle` it. An ATM without sl(immers will not wingle at all. While entering PIN, always block the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible hidden cameras from recording the number being punched.

Keep all transaction receipts safely, so you can verify them carefully against bank statements. When discarding, be sure to properly destroy all transactions receipts.
