PESHAWAR: The National Awami Party chief, Khan Abdul Wali Khan, has called for more powers regarding financial matters for the Upper House (Senate) without which, he said, it would merely be a decoration piece, and a luxury to have. In an article published today [Jan 1] in daily `Shahbaz`, Wali Khan said that although the NAP demand for an Upper House had been accepted, it had been denuded of effective powers on the plea that nowhere in the world had any Upper House been given more powers. He argued that the conditions in Pakistan were different ... because here one province had a population bigger than that of the other three put together. The NAP chief also objected to the powers of the Prime Minister, which, he said, had crossed the confines of a parliamentary democracy, and even the powers of a President in a Presidential system.
