THIS refers to the article `What we need to grow` (Dec 8). The writer has outlined a road map for achieving development and prosperity, but it is like putting the horse before the cart. The starting point for any meaningful reform must be the abolishment of feudalism in the country and implementation of land reforms as a way to empower people.
The bold step was carried out in India and Bangladesh long ago. As a result, the population of both the countries is more enlightened, assertive, politically conscious and self-confident.
Much of the population in Pakistan remains subjugated because of the feudal culture. The first goal must be unshacklingthe people from virtual slavery, which is the initial route to empowerment. Once this is achieved, other steps will fall in line, including population control.
But who would undertake such a task with so many roadblocks put up by the vested interests? It is anybody`s guess.
We do not have a father figure like Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah to lead us on the path forward. As things stand today, unfortunately, there is little hope in this regard.
