SINDH Assembly candidate and PPP representative Waheeda Shah`s slapping and punching respectable women polling staff who belong to the respectable profession of teaching clearly reflects what the powerful landlords` behaviour is when dealing with the powerless and helpless class. The silence of the humiliated victims, however, showed how much dignified they were.
I wonder why the presiding officer hesitated in issuing her an arrest order at the time; it is authorised by the rules of law.
The apparent cause might be that either she was not aware of the rules orfeared the consequences.
Surprisingly, realising the severity of her offence and the expected punishment, she managed a press conference with a burka clad lady (confirmed fake by neighbours) presenting to be the presiding officer exonerating her of her disgraceful behaviour dismissing it as unintentional and due to some misapprehension.
She is yet free. An inquiry has been ordered to carry out a probe. The authorities concerned are requested not tolet the ruthless lady escape. The credibility of the ECP should be ensured and justice should be given to the victims.
NIAZ BETAB Karachi Brutal behaviour THIS is appropos of the letter `Brutal behaviour` by Col (Retd) Riaz Jafri (Feb 28). The writer rightly stated that the ECP should investigate the matter fully and not make itself known as an organisation without teeth.
Here I would like to point out that merely a `misunderstanding` does not qualify the aspirant legislator for exoneration because evenif she had attacked her real target, she would still have been guilty of misconduct.
HASSAAN QAYYUM Lahore Putting a ban AFTER beating the polling officers on camera, video of which is being aired on TV news channels, it shall be appropriate for PPP party leaders to withdraw Waheeda Shah from the candidature.
