Policeman injured in picket attack dies

R AWALPINDI: A police official who was badly injured in firing on police picket on Feb 21 embraced martyrdom at the intensive care unit of Benazir Bhutto Hospital on Friday increasing the death toll to two.
Sajid Mehmood, 37, head constable, posted at Sadiqabad police station was among the five including four police officials, who came under gun attack on the police picket set up during the campaign against kite flying.
Sajid was in critical condition since being admitted to the BBH and breathed his last on Friday.
Mohammad Zafran, 40, embraced martyrdom on the fateful day. The suspected killer is still at large.
Sajid`s funeral prayer was held at the police lines headquarters on Friday which was attended by the District Sessions Judge Rana Masood Akhtar, City Police Officer Abbas Ahsan, SSP Operation Syed Ali Akbar and SSP Investigation Mohammad Faisal.
Sajid joined the police department in 2000 as a constable and later was promoted to the rank of head constable. He was posted at Sadigbad police station on Oct 27, 2018. He left behind a widow, two sons and a daughter.
During anti-kite flying campaign, a police picket with hve police ofñcials had been established at Sadiqabad Chowk. On Feb 21 an unidentified man carrying two pistols in his hands opened fire on the police picket leaving six people, including five police official injured.
One of the police officials died the spot while four others were injured, two of them critically. The injured SI Mohammad Akram, 52, and Shahzad Mehboob, 25, are still being treated in the BBH.
Despite lapse of eight days, the police have been unable to trace the attackers.
Police have been claiming that they would trace the attacker as they have been working on different lines and have investigated more than 30 suspects so far.
