JI launches three-week drive for women rights

LAHORE: The Jamaat-i-Islami on Sunday launched a 20-day special campaign for the protection of women rights in the country.

Party Emir Senator Sirajul Haq said the objective of the three-week (March 1 to March 20) campaign is to ensure safety and security of women, end the culture of harassment and ensurewomen right to inheritance.

He was addressing a conference in connection with International Woman Day at a localhotelhere on Sunday.

The JI women chapter organised the event which was addressed by Dr Durdana Saddiqui, Dr Samia Raheel Qazi and others. Women from different walks of life attended and shared their thoughts on the occasion.

He said JI would organise ral-lies and conference all over the country on the occasion of International Women Day on March 8.

Highlighting importance of women role in the nation building, the JI emir said no country could prosper without giving due rights to its female segment of society. But, he hastened to add that Islam never allowed a mix culture.

He said Islam emphasised girls`education as a literate mother plays a key role in the education of the family, the basic unit of society.

Presenting a charter of demand, Siraj called for establishing women universities in all provinces and basic health units at village level to facilitate the womenfolk to benefit from the facilities at their doorstep.

He said the government must take steps against girls` andchild trafficking and for training girl students in first aid and civil defence at schools and colleges.

He said the women prisoners under bars for years in minor crimes should be released and strict laws be made against women harassment at workplaces.

He said the JI would soon submit Woman Protection Bill in Senate.
