Man dies during protest near Afghan border

QUETTA: A person was killed and seven others, including five Frontier Corps personnel, were injured after FC troops shot at protesters hurling stones at them near the Friendship Gate close to the Pak-Afghan border on Saturday.
The border was closed following the incident and was re-opened af ter the protesters had dispersed.
Sources said that a large crowd of people had gathered on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border waiting to cross it.
When the Afghan forces and FC troops refused to allow anyone to cross the border without producing original identification and travel documents, Tazkira (issued by Afghan side), several people on both sides of the border started shouting slogans and hurling stones at the of ficials.
The Afghan forces had asked the Pakistanis waiting to enter Vash Mandi toproduce their original CNICs and refused to accept photocopies, while the FC officials at the Friendship Gate refused to accept photocopies of the Tazkira.
The people gathered at Pakistan`s side of the border then started throwing stones at the Friendship Gate, injuring five FC personnel.
The FC of ficials began baton charging the protesters to disperse them and fired shots in the air, injuring three people.
The border was subsequently closed.
`Two persons received bullet injuries during the firing into the air,` official sources said, adding that they were taken to the district hospital.
One of them was taken to Quetta for treatment but he succumbed to his injuries late at night. He was identified as Faizullah.
FC officials confirmed that five of their men had received injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment. `Five FC men were injured because of stone pelting by protesters,` a senior of ficial of the Frontier Corps said, adding that two FC men had resorted to baton charging the protesters and firing shots in the air.
`The Pak-Afghan border reopened af ter two hours,` FC of ficials confirmed, adding that situation in the border area was normal.
