100 heatstroke camps set up in Karachi

KARACHl: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Sindh on Tuesday said that the provincial government had established over 100 heatstroke camps in the city as a heatwave was feared in the first three days of the current month.
A spokesperson for the PDMA Sindh said special wards had been established in the government-run hospitals, which were solely dedicated to take care of people hit by heatstroke. He asked people in the teeming metropolis to take precautionary measures in the first three days of the current month to avoid possible heatstroke.
`People are advised not to expose themselves to the sun unnecessarily during the first three days of May as soaring temperatures could possibly cause heatwave,` said the PDMA official, adding that the citizens should stick to pre-emptive measures to save themselves from the dangers of the heatwave.
`Those who go out in unavoidable circumstances should cover their heads.
Besides, they should keep umbrellas, towels [and] water ... with them.
The PDMA officials said that staying away from laborious chores would help during the sizzling days.
They also advised parents not to allow their children to play in open grounds when temperatures were high.
Officials at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital confirmed that they had received five people who fell sick because of sizzling temperatures.
They said the patients included three men and two women and were released after giving required treatment.
Officials at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital said that no patients with heatstroke reached their facilities.
