11 rescued after fire erupts in high-rise on Chundrigar Road

KARACHI: Eleven people were rescued when a fire broke out in a high-rise building with offices of banks and different institutions on I.I. Chundrigar Road late on Saturday night, officials said on Sunday.

No one was hurt in the incident, the officials added.

Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaan Khan said that they received information about the fire in the basement of 12-storey Al-Rahim Tower at 11:30pm. When they mobilised rescue teams, the smoke had already accumulated in the building.

The fire that apparently caused by a “short circuit” had spread through wiring in the building.

Some employees of two private banks, a travel agency and others climbed on the rooftop from where they were rescued with the help of a snorkel.

Four fire tenders managed to control the blaze after hectic efforts.

The fire partially damaged one of the cars parked in the basement.

Woman dies of ‘heatstroke’

A woman died of a suspected heatstroke in New Karachi on Sunday.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said that the body of a 50-year-old woman was brought to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital by a rickshaw driver, who told doctors that her health deteriorated while travelling in his vehicle.

Her identity could not be ascertained till late in the night.
