MITHI: The Supreme Court-formed one-man Commission on Minorities Rights headed by Dr Shoaib Suddle has taken notice of torture on Dr Ghansham Das by an influential local leader of Pakistan Peoples Party in Islamkot town during the first phase of local government election on June 26.
The commission’s director general Qasim Khan the other day sought a detailed report from Tharparkar SSP Hassan Sardar Niazi on the shameful incident after receiving an application from a Thari lawyer Sarwan Kumar Bheel, seeking justice for Dr Das.
Ghulam Mohammad Junejo, the PPP leader who also an employee of health department, humiliated Dr Das in public on the election day. A video that went viral afterwards showed Junejo slapping the doctor, who was performing duty as presiding officer at a polling station, and hurling abuses at him.
The Commission was formed by Supreme Court in 2019 to oversee implementation of its judgement (PLD 2014 SC 699) on minority rights.
