2025-07-02
TOKYO: American troops armed with antitank guns pushed northward today (July 1) from southern landing bases, to meet the advancing Communists as GeneralMacArthur`s headquarters announced that Suwon 25 miles south of Seoul, was back in South Korean hands.

[Gen] MacArthur`s HQ said ... that advance elements of the Northerners penetrated Suwon last night but were apparently not strong enough to hold their gains. The Communists were now reported concentrated ten miles north of Suwon, 15 miles below the River Han crossings from Seoul.

The Defence Department in Washington reported that Suwon had been overrun by Communists. Another message said that Americans set fire to their headquarters at Suwon and pulled to Taejon, temporary capital of South Korea further South.

[Meanwhile, news agencies in Algeria reported] nearly five hundred women today (July 1) paraded the streets of Philippeville ...

protesting against the fresh wave of terrorism in the town and the unjust detention of their husbands by the French authorities. The women demonstrators, carrying posters condemning French terrorism, marched up to the prison where their husbands are detained.

They demanded their immediate release.
