PPP in a fix over Ghani`s Senate seat

2016-08-02
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is said to be in a fix over the issue of Senate seat of Saeed Ghani, who has been appointed adviser to the Sindh chief minister on labour affairs.

Talking to Dawn on Monday, Senator Ghani hinted that he might give up his Senate seat because of the huge task of handling issues of the labour ministry in the Sindh government.

`I might surrender my Senate seat because it is not humanly possible to work ontwo different positions simultaneously,` he said.

Mr Ghani said that the PPP leadership had taken no decision about the fate of his Senate seat, but his Senate colleagues wanted him to retain the upper house seat.

Mr Ghani is one of the most active PPP members in the Senate and he has actively participated in discussions on all national matters in the upper house as well as in standing committees.

Meanwhile, a senior PPP leader told Dawn on condition of anonymity that therewere some precedents that some senators had kept two positions in the past.

He said that incumbent Information Minister Pervez Rashid had retained two positions when he simultaneously kept the charge of an adviser to the chief minister of Punjab and a senator.

Similarly, PPP leader and incumbent senator Taj Haider also held two positions in 1994-95 when he was a senator and also served as an adviser to former Sindh chief minister Abdullah Shah.-Staf f Reporter
