LA HORE: In association with the irrigation department, the city administration on Wednesday started work on developing protection dykes to save the agriculture land of Talwara village that was being fast eroded by the River Ravi.

Residents of the village, situated on the river bank in the north-east of the provincial capital, has been facing the issue of land erosion for the last couple of years. Some months ago, they had also protested a couple of times against the government for not paying heed to the issue.

The city administration led by the then deputy commissioner, Sumair Ahmad Syed, had taken up the matter with the irrigation department. However, the issue could not be resolved by the department at that time.

`Some days ago, the department agreed to make adequate arrangements to resolve the issue. And finally on Wednesday, they, under the city administration supervision, started work to develop protective dykes by dumping stones with heavy machinery in the village`s area affected by the river,` a spokesman for the administration told Dawn.

He said the Lahore DC retired Capt Anwar U1 Haq deputed Shalimar Assistant Commissioner Zaheer Liaqat as focal person for the ongoing work being carried out by the engineers of irrigation department.

Meanwhile, a team headed by Model Town AC retrieved two pieces of state land (12-kanal) from land grabbers at Mauza Halokay and Dhallo Kalan.

On the other hand, the city administration in a meeting on Wednesday asked the registered charity organisations to submit applications for having permission to set up hidecollection camps in Lahore on Eid-ul-Azha.
