Province-wide cleanliness drive launched

PESHAWAR: The Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) has launched a special cleanliness campaign in connection with `marka-i-haq` and independence week celebrations. The campaign will continue until August 14.

According to a statement issued here on Friday, the campaign was inaugurated by the provincial minister for higher education, Meena Khan Afridi, while the WSSP board of directors` chairman, Malik Shahab Hussain, board member Gulzada Khan, chief executive officer, Yasir Ali Khan, general manager operations, Muhammad Ijaz, zonal manager, Tariq Aziz, and other officials were also present on the occasion.

An awareness walk-led by the provincial minister was held during which pamphlets were distributed among shopkeepers and people.

The provincial minister on the occasion stated that in areas without sanitation companies, the provincial government has provided vehicles for cleanliness and allowed recruitment of sanitation staff. He said the public should cooperate with the staff, take ownership of the city, and contribute tothe campaign It may be mentioned that the special cleanliness drive has been launched across the province, and cabinet members and provincial assembly representatives will participate in the campaign in their respective areas.

Reportedly, more than 2,500 personnel are participating in the campaign, and around 400 small and large vehicles are being used to collect garbage.

The campaign focuses on cleaning up drains and removing garbage heaps.

To raise public awareness and encourage people to dump waste only once a day at designated points, the services of elected local government representatives are being utilised.

Awareness walks are also being organised in collaboration with neighborhood council chairmen and the elected representatives..

Meanwhile, CEO Yasir Ali Khan said that the focus was on cleaning up streets, neighborhoods, roads, and drains, as well as eliminating garbage heaps and raising public awareness. He emphasised that if citizens dispose of garbage once a day at the designated points, it will help maintain a clean environment and enhance the beauty of the city.
