`TTP man` gets 21 years in prison for keeping explosives

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court on Tuesday sentenced a man to 21 years in prison in two cases pertaining to possession of explosive material and an illicit weapon.

The court found Adnan Abu Hamza, said to be associated with the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, guilty of carrying explosive substances and an unlicensed weapon in Manghopir in 2013.

The judge of the ATC-II, who conducted the trial after combining the cases, handed down 14-year imprisonment in the explosive material case and seven-year imprisonment in the illicit weapon case.

However, both sentences would run concurrently.

The crime investigation department of police had claimed that the accused was af filiated with the outlawed TTP.

He was booked in two cases under Section 4/5 of the ExplosiveSubstances Act, 1908 and Section 23(1)(a) of the Sindh Arms Act, 2013 read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

Syed Farhat Abbas Zaidi was found guilty of carrying an unlicensed pistol when he was arrested in October 2013 in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Sikandar Ameer Pahore, who conducted the trial at the judicial complex inside the Karachi central prison, also imposed a fine of Rs10,000 and in case of default the convict would have to undergo an additional three months in prison.

The accused was also being tried by the ATCs in a number of sectarian killing cases, including the murder of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat leader Maulana Akbar Saeed Farooqui.
