THIS is apropos motor vehicle registration for new cars. I bought a new locally manufactured car in July and I have been unable to register it as the counter is closed and there is an ongoing rift between the Federal Bureau of Revenue and the Excise and Taxation, Sindh.
Owing to this situation many cars are waiting to be registered. Now I am without a vehicle as I cannot bring my car out on the road as my vehicle is an unregistered one.
This issue began with the FBR notification during the recent budget in which the withholding tax was increased for both taxpayers and non-taxpayers and which is to be paid for the registration of every new car. Besides, the transfer of old cars was also raised to exorbitant levels.
Previously, the excise and taxation department was collecting withholding tax during the registration of new vehicles or transferring of old ones, but now the FBR is asking for the submission of the withholding tax separately.
As there is no provision for this task to be discharged separately in the software that manages vehicles` registration, work is still pending.
As a result, many used car owners who have transferred theirvehicles cannot transfer them to the new owners. This situation is also a grim security threat if people are allowed to drive cars on open (fake) letters.
I request the authorities concerned to resolve the issue.
