RAWALPINDI: After their use by the Islamabad police in the LG polls, Rawalpindi police have also been provided with 1,763 Special Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs).
SIMs will be given to the in-charge of security at each polling station and will be linked to the main control room, which is to be established at the office of City Police Officer on polling day.
Through the SIMs, the control room will be able to monitor the in-charge of security’s movements, which will be seen on a television screen to be erected at the control room.
SSP Operations Malik Karamat told Dawn that SIMs were introduced to ensure police presence at polling stations during and after polls.
He added that it will also enable the police to check if those officers deployed for protecting the election material being shifted to polling stations had enough back-up.
The SSP Operations said that after the third phase of the local bodies elections was over, SIMs will be given to the police deployed at entry and exit points, those deployed on night patrols and to guards, so their whereabouts were known.
Earlier, some 4,000 SIMs were given to Islamabad police personnel on election duty and their movements were monitored through them from a control room.
Separately, a report on a violation of the code of conduct by political party leaders and workers has been sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan by the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi.
RPO Mohammad Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja told Dawn there had been three or four violations, including those by the former PML-N MNA Malik Shakeel Awan and PTI leader Imran Khan, who conducted an election rally last Tuesday.
He said the Punjab chief minister had ordered legal action to be taken against such political leaders and workers involved, irrespective of which party they belonged to.
The RPO added that the police had registered cases for the violations.
