LAHORE: An election tribunal on Friday ordered a recount of votes polled in Punjab Assembly`s constituency PP-107 Hafizabad.
Tribunal member Kazim Ali Malik passed this order on a petition filed by Sarfaraz Bhatti, a runner-up candidate of the PML-N from the constituency.
The petitioner alleged that returned candidate, Nighar Intisar of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), manoeuvered her victory in the by-poll held in May 2014 and rigged it. He asked the tribunal to order a recount of votes to prove the charges.
The tribunal admitted his plea and ordered inspection and recounting of votes with directions to the returning officer to submit an initial report within a week.
The constituency had fallen vacant after MPA Shoaib Shahnawaz was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on charges of rigging.
