KARACHI: Id-ul-Fitr, the happiest of all Muslim festivals, is being celebrated today [Jan 2] all over the country with usual fervour and excitement.
The day has been made more auspicious this year by the celebrations of the Nuzul-ul-Quran, the 1,400th anniversary of the revelation of the Holy Quran.
Big congregations will be held for Id prayers at Idgahs and principal mosques all over the country.
Prayers will also be offered for the strength and prosperity of Pakistan and other Muslim States as well as for the liberation of Kashmir, Palestine and Arab territories grabbed by Israel.
In Karachi, the main congregation will be held at the Polo Ground at 9 a.m. Prayers will also be offered at a number of other leading mosques. The rate of Fitra this year has been fixed at Rs1.25.
Id fervour began last evening after people sighted the moon. It was a clear sky for everybody to sight the moon and the people raised their hands for prayers as soon as they spotted the thin line of the crescent and rushed home to makepreparationsforthe day.-Correspondent [Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Karachi,] over two lakh leaflets were air-dropped in the City on the occasion of the first day of the new year calling upon the people to pledge to work for the progress and uplift of the nation.
The leaflets were dropped by the Department of National Integration, West Pakistan on all major cities of West Pakistan, titled `new year`s pledge` The leaflet said, `New year is 10th year of the revolution`
