Woman killed in accident near Fuaast

KARACHI: A woman was killed while a female student and another person were injured critically in an accident on the main University Road on Thursday, according to police.
A minibus hit the victims while they were standing outside the Federal University ofArts,ScienceandTechnology (Fuaast), killing Mrs Sadaf Fatima on the spot and injuring the female student and a man, said Gulshan SP Dr Fahad Ahmed.The incident triggered a protest by a mob, which tried to set the minibus on fire, but police intervention prevented this, said the officer.
Aziz Bhatti police station SHO Mohammed Raheem Chandio told Dawn that the girl, who was a student of the Urdu university, was in critical condition.
Police have arrested errant driver Imran and impounded the vehicle.
Robbery bid inside KU The husband of a professor of the University of Karachi was shot at and wounded by suspected robbers over resistance inside the residential area of the varsity on Thursday,according to police and teachers` body officials.
Mr Shahzad was injured by two suspected robbers riding on a motorcycle inside the KU Staff Town, said Sohrab Goth SP Chaudhry Saifullah.
The officer said Shahzad had drawn some cash from a bank on Tariq Road and it appeared that the suspects were chasing him.
Karachi University Teachers` Society (Kuts) president Shakeel Faroogi told Dawn that the bullet injury to the husband of Ms Sobia, professor of the sociology department, outside her official residence inside the varsity reflected a `serious lapse of security`.
He said Shahzad, who was admitted to Aga KhanUniversity Hospital for treatment where his condition was stated to be out of danger, lived in Saudi Arabia and had recently come to Pakistan.
Mr Faroogi, quoting the family, said that as Shahzad returned from Tariq Road and reached home inside Staff Town, the suspects demanded cash and other valuables and injured him over resistance.
`It is scary that in the presence of Rangers such a terrible incident took place at the gate of the professor`s residence, said the Kuts president.
`We have observed that the watch and ward system in KU has gradually diminished and there is no check on the vehicles leaving the campus,` he added.
