GUJRAT: The situation on the University of Gujrat`s Hafiz Hayat campus remained tense as the students continued theirprotestforthe second consecutive day on Thursday by blocking transport service and locking the main gates of the institution.
A heavy contingent of police and ofhcials of intelligence agencies remained deployed on the campus to make sure no violent activity take place. The students could not reach the vice chancellor`s secretariat butkept chanting slogans for what they said revision of policies of the varsity administration.
The UoG administration held talks with the representatives of the protesters to sort out the issues and identified the students who had roughed up Vice-Chancellor Dr Ziaul Qayyum and his personal staff during Wednesday`s violent protest.
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has sought a detailed report on the protest by the students. Punjab EducationMinister RanaMashhood Ahmed Khan has asked the vice chancellor to submit a report regarding the violent protest during which official vehicles and the VC`s secretariat had been damaged by stonethrowing students.
The UoG had constituted an inquiry team comprising Dr Yaqoob, Sheikh Abdul Rasheed and RajaMuhammad Umar, the security in charge of the varsity, to ascertain the facts and submit an initial report to the Punjab government.
Sources told Dawn that the committee had examined some footages of the protest and identified those who roughed up the VC and tortured his staff.
An official said the inquiry commit tee had submit te d it s initial findings to the VC, who had to sent it to the education minister. The committee is learnt to have found the involvement of some faculty members in instigating the protest.
According to the protesters, several issues prompted the protest demonstration against the university administration and these include a strict policy of not promoting the students securing less than 1.5 CGPA.
