Conservation work

2018-02-03
RECENTLY I visited collectorate building in Larkana (1902) and saw the ongoing work at the tombs of Bohi Ja Quna Dakhan, Shikarpur. I noticed that conservation work at these sights is not being done under conservation laws.

There were no signboards for publicinformation. In Sindh, conservation of heritage sights and monuments is at the mercy of contractors and their masons.

Conservation is a highly technical work.

The work at collectorate building and at the tombs of Bohi Ja Quna is testimony to the poor conservation work. In view of this, we should ensure proper conservation at Moenjodaro, Pukka Fort, Hyderabad and other places.

All funds earmarked for conservation of monuments could go down the drain if the conservation work is lef t at the mercy of the contractors.

Prior to any conservation activity, conservation notes should be circulated, focusing on methods, cautions and problem solving techniques. The preparation of comprehensive drawings must be made compulsory. Conservation must not be limited to a specific time or a project. All related activities must continue simultaneously.

The material required for conservation and preservation work may be procured through contractors, while the conservation and restoration should be carried out by the department concerned.

The Sindh cultural department should learn lesson from the Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of the Heritage of Sindh and rehabilitation of Shah Baharo tomb in Larkana. The Sindh government should arrange special training programmes for conservators.
