Customs driver found dead near Ijtimagah

KARACHI: A 58-year-old man was found dead with visible marks of strangulation on Saturday night in the famous religious congregation regularly held in Manghopir, said police and hospital officials.

They added that the body of Fida Mohammed was recovered from back seat of an official car (GP6465) at the gate-9 parking of Ijtimagah wherethree-day religious gathering of the Tableeghi Jamaat ended on Sunday that was attended by a large number of people.

A senior police officer said that the deceased was a driver of Customs and was posted in Gwadar, Balochistan.

He had two wives, one lives in Gwadar and the other lives in his native place in Mansehra in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

It appeared that he had come from Balochistan to attend the religious gathering where he wasfound dead.

The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to ascertain exact cause of death.

Additional Police Surgeon Dr Saleem Shaikh said that there were marks of rope around his neck, indicating the possibility that he was strangled to death. The man had died around two days ago.

However, one senior officer, who wished not to be named because the Sindh government has recently imposed a ban on media talk of officials, said that itmight not be possible to kill someone in the congregation with the help of rope.

The officer revealed that over Rs353,000 cash and a mobile phone were also recovered from the deceased`s pocket. There were no sign of any resistance inside the car. The deceased had made his last call to his family, informing them that he was present in the religious gathering.

The officer added that they were waiting for the final report of doctors to proceed further with the incident.
