Blackout of Godse

2023-03-03
WASHINGTON: Aside from publication of a few items in the last two weeks, there already appears to have been a blackout on news about Nathuram Vinayak Godse, the alleged assassin of Mr Gandhi and the country-wide conspiracy, of which Godse was thought to have been merely a tool, to kill top leaders of the All-India Congress ...

writes Margaret Parton in the New York Herald Tribune, from New Delhi.

In general, the Indian public has accepted the abstract concept that a spirit of religious hatred rather than a single individual, was responsible for Mr Gandhi`s death. For Westerners, to whom Klieg lights and ballyhoo are the inevitable handmaidens of murder, the ease of this acceptance by India seems phenomenal. There have been no pictures of Godse in the Indian Press, and no interviews. ... For the Indian people and the unprotesting Indian Press Godse has become the forgotten man. This attitude not only has been encouraged by the authorities, who do not want the young man to become a publicised martyr, but is ... in keeping with the present mood in India.
