Unit set up to deal with forced marriages

GUJRAT: The Jhelum district government has set up the Forced Marriages Unit (FMU) to take swift action on the complaints of forced marriages.

District Coordination Officer Zulfiqar Ahmed Ghuman while talking to a delegation of social workers on Thursday said that since a good number of dual nationality holders were residing in Jhelum district and cases of forced marriages also involve d overseas Pakistanis, especially British nationals, therefore, a separate mechanism was needed to act swiftly if any complaint of forced marriages was received.

The DCO said the district government had already set up the Overseas Pakistanis Facilitation Centre to resolve their problems, including property disputes, documents verifications.

He said the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working on forced marriages should hold seminars in Jhelum with the collaboration of the district government for the public awareness.
