Burden of cancer

2025-04-03
THIS is with reference to the letter `Cancer in Baltistan` (March 10), which highlighted the alarming rise in cancer cases, and the urgent need for improved healthcare facilities in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region.

Cancer has become a growing health emergency in Pakistan, with thousands of patients struggling to access quality care.

While government efforts are commendable, they remain insufficient in addressingthe increasingburden ofcancer.

The recent activation of a cancer ward at Bolan Medical Complex in Balochistan is a step in the right direction, but much more needsto be done to ensure equitable access to healthcare across the country.

Balochistan, in particular, faces severe challenges due to limited facilities and an increasing number of patients. The absence of advanced imaging and diagnostic services further exacerbates the issue, leadingtodelayed diagnoses and compromised treatment outcomes.

It is imperative that the government prioritises investment in upgrading these facilities and expanding access to specialised care.

Private institutions also have a crucial role in bridging the gap in cancer care.

Collaborations with international medical technology providers can enhance the availability of advanced diagnostic and treatment options.

The integration of digital health platforms and telemedicine services can significantly improve accessibility to healthcare, especially in underserved areas.Furthermore, addressing the shortage of skilled healthcare professionalsis essential. Training programmes for medical practitioners, supported by both public and private institutions, are critical to ensuring that cancer patients receive high-quality care.

A comprehensive approach is needed to combat this crisis effectively. Pakistan must leverage medical technology, increase investment in healthcare infrastructure, and foster stronger public-private partnerships to ensure thatno regionis left behind in the fight against cancer.
