Protest against choked sewerage, garbage in industrial area

GUJRAT: The roads of the city`s only industrial estate are inundated with sewage while heaps of garbage are scattered along many of them due to negligence of the municipal corporation.

The situation that has been persisting for almost three weel(s forced the factory owners and worl(ers to hold a protest demonstration on Tuesday against the civic authorities for not keeping the industrial area clean.

Usman Rafique, who owns a small printing unit in the area, told Dawn the sewerage around four major roads of the area was consistently choked and the roads would often get inundated with sewage, making it hard for him to reach the unit through motorcycle whereas his customers also found it difficult to reach the unit.

The industrial estate has various 1(inds of manufacturing units but most of them are of electric fans andnowadays the fan manufacturing and sale are at its peak due to which the number of visitors to the estate also increases.

Another manufacturer said the municipal corporation was not able to keep the industrial area roads clean despite the fact that the pottery manufacturing units, owned by Gujrat Mayor Haji Nasir Mahmoodand MPA Imran Zafar, also existed there and they were aware of the situation.

The protesters warned the authorities concerned of lodging a series of demonstrations and sit-ins against the municipal corporation in front of its offices and on the city roads if the situation did not improve.
