DSP held in Rs860m fraud case

By Our Staff Correspondent 2017-06-03
MULTAN: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Multan, arrested on Friday the Okara deputy superintendent of police (DSP)for his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of Rs860 million, according to an official handout.

Legal DSP Tanveer Amjad allegedly embezzled Rs860m as drawing and disbursing officer of the Vehari police office during his posing there from 2008 to 2012.

`Up to Rs60m worth vouchers/receipts were found to be bogus while investigation into the remaining Rs800m is still in progress,` says the handout.

It stated the accused in connivance with others (already in judicial custody) disbursed funds to officers/officials without taking into account the requisite documents for disbursement of medical claims as well as under other heads of accounts.

He will be produced before the accountability court on Saturday.

The case, however, presents strange working of the accountability system as nine other accused in the case continue to serve in the police department.

NAB had recommended the placement of the nine accused, including an additional inspector general (AIG) and district police officer (DPO), on the exit control list (ECL) in con-nection with the case.

Sources said the efforts were underway to fix the responsibility on lower staff to save the skins of high rank police of ficers.

They said the Multan NAB dispatched a letter on April 19 to the additional director monitoring wing-I, NAB headquarters, for the placement of eight people on the ECL, who are: SSP Shariq Kamal Siddiqui (officer on special duty), AIG Shakir Hussain Dawar (posted at the central police office), Kasur DPO Ali Nasir Rizvi, Data Entry Operator (central police of fice) Muhammad Imran, district accounts officers Muhammad Iqbal Anjam and Muhammad Khalid Farooq, Deputy Accounts Officer of Vehari Shahid Ali Qureshi and Assistant Accounts Officer of Vehari Ishtiaq Ahmed.

The NAB headquarters, however, did not include the name of Umar Akhtar Laleka, one of the former DPOs of Vehari, on the ECL. They said over objection by some investigation team members, another letter was dispatched which was carrying the name of Mr Laleka only.

They said although the NAB authorities have converted the inquiry into investigation and recommended to place the names of the accused on the ECL but they did not recommend their suspension from service.

NAB Deputy Director Media Cell Asim Raza said that the case had been forwarded to NAB by the office of the inspector general of police and a letter for converting inquiry into investigation had also been sent to the IG of fice.

`Now the police department should take action against the accused police of ficers by itself,` he said.
