KARACHI: The police informed on Saturday an administrative judge of antiterrorism courts that they had released a suspect in a case pertaining to an attack on a Rangers checkpoint for lack of evidence.

Asad Ahmed Siddiqui had been booked for allegedly hurling a hand grenade at a Rangers checkpoint in North Nazimabad in January. The paramilitary soldiers remained unhurt.

The Rangers had picked up the suspect and placed him under three-month preventive detention for an inquiry. Later he was handed over to police.

The investigating officer through a report informed the administrative judge that the suspect was released under Section 497(2) of the criminal procedure code since no evidence was found against him during investigation to charge him in the case. After examining it, the court accepted the police report.
