LONDON: The General Secretary of the Socialist International said today [July 2] that 10,000 people have been arrested in India ... according to information received fromreliable sources.... Mr Hans Janitschek, of the London-based World Alliance of Social Democratic Parties, said ... that he had called a meeting of the Socialist International Bureau ... to discuss the Indian situation. His statement said the arrests had been carried out by the Central Reserve Police ... which was under the direct orders of Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, assisted by state Police forces. News agencies [Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Islamabad,] Rana Mohammad Hanif Khan told the National Assembly during Question Hour ... that the question of eliminating Riba was under consideration of the Government. The question as to what constitutes Riba and whether the interest etc., as are levied fall under this category is yet to be decided. This calls for a detailed examination of exact Sharai position of each and every transaction, necessary changes in law and question of setting up supporting institutions to evolve workable alternative economic system.
