KARACHI: Former lawmaker Nabil Gabol wanted to create a law and order situation in Lyari with the help of gangsters, alleged the Karachi-South DIG on Sunday.
`One political personality, Nabil Gabol, has asked Ghaffar Zikri, one of the ringleaders of Lyari gang warfare, to create disturbance in Lyari and he [gangster] would be provided arms, ammunition and money for this purpose,` added DIG Dr JamilAhmed.
Speaking at a press conference at his office, the police officer claimed that Mr Gabol had also asked Ghaffar Zikri that a person identified as Rauf Nazim would provide him (Zikri) the required funds to carry out the plan.
This was `disclosed` by a detained suspect, Amir aka Dhobi, one of the commanders of the Ghaffar Zikri gang in Lyari. He was arrested in Lyari`s Kalri area on Saturday night, the ofñcer said.
During the initial probe, the suspect confessed to killing Rasheed alias Tension, main commander of the Rehman Dakait gang. He also admitted to kidnapping one Ismaili community member in Keamari who was released after receiving Rs5 million ransom in Zikri Mohalla of Lyari, named after Ghaffar Zikri.
The DIG said the detained suspect would be questioned further and if `tangible evidence` emerged, legal action would be taken against Nabil Gabol.
`It would also be explored why Mr Gabol wants to create law and order situation in Lyari,` said the officer.
Answering a question, City SSP Fida Hussain said Nabil Gabol had contacted Ghaffar Zikri three to four months back through internet mobile phone facility WhatsApp.
The DIG South recalled that Lyari was the `epicentre` of crimes but after active police actions, the situation had improve d there to the extent that extortion and killings had ended in the area. It was because of this better law and order situation that the city witnessed shopping ofRs70 billion during Eid in Karachi.
`If Nabil Gabol wants to revive the old bad situation in Lyari, it would definitely be a matter of grave concern for us,` said Dr Jamil.
He refuted the allegation that the city police were being `politicised`.
`Police are performing their professional work only,` said the officer.
Meanwhile, Nabil Gabol in a statement said the Sindh government in reaction to his criticism of its performance had levelled such allegations against him, though he had never heard of Amir alias Dhobi.
`I am a political worker and believe in political struggle. Lyari is my home and its peace is dear to me,` said Mr Gabol. He asked why the chief minister had visited the residence of alleged gangster Uzair Baloch immediately after taking the oath.
He alleged the DIG-South was acting on the instructions of the government. `If police have proof, arrest me, but police officers should avoid political statement, said Mr Gabol.
Hate literature The DIG-South claimed that the police were actively pursuing the National Action Plan against terrorism and stated that a high level meeting was held in which it was decided that action would be taken against hate literature and misuse ofloudspeakerby religious and sectarian elements.
Murder case against SSP In a reply to a question about registration of a case against SSP Mian Jamshed on charges of 1(illing his wife, Hina, in Defence recently, the DIG said if tangible evidence emerged during probe about the involvement of the officer in the murder case, he would be arrested.
He said the victim`s brother was there but he did not give a statement to the police. Besides the family did not get the FIR lodged against the officer and ultimately the police registered the murder case against the SSP on behalf of the state.
