Militants attack Indian army camp in Baramulla; guard killed

SRINAGAR: At least six suspected militants attacked an Indian army camp in northern part of held Kashmir on Sunday night, killing one border guard and wounding another, two weeks after a similar attack killed at least 18 of its soldiers.

The attack on the camp of India`s 46 Rastriya Rifles in Baramulla, which also houses a unit of the Border Security Force (BSF), started at around 10:30pm (1700 GMT) and repeated exchangesofñreensued.

`One BSF...[man] was killed and one injured when militants tried to enter an army camp,` said Superintendent of Police Imtiyaz Hussein.

Local reports that two attackers had been killed could not be immediately confirmed.

Baramulla is a district capital that lies on the road from Srinagar to the frontier settlement of Uri where the Sept 18 attack on the army base took place.

Another police officer, Syed Javeid Mujataba Gillani, said of the Sunday attack it was not immediately known whether the militants tried to enter the army camp.

The camp is the local headquarters of a counterinsurgency military unit. The paramilitary soldiers hit by gunfire were also stationed in the army camp, police said.

The new attack came three days after the Indian army claimed it had carried out a `surgical strike` in the region and destroyed `terrorist launch pads`.
