SINCE Pakistan is an agricuture-based country, maximum benefits from crops are the need of the hour. The existing canal system is old enough to meet our full needs of crops.
There is a dire need to tap all available alternative methods to meet our water needs.
Windmill energy and solar energy can be used in watering crops through tube wells. This is also necessary when global warming is looming large, resulting in water scarcity.
The water table is also likely to go down.
I suggest using irrigation through plasticpipes, which will over a period save water from being wasted and also bring more land under cultivation.
Another option is storage for rainwater harvesting so that at the time of acute shortage the same could be utilised.
There are chances that global temperature will increase by two degrees Celsius, causing rapid glacier melting, especially when the minimum forests we have can also not store water subsurface.
The National Agriculture Research Council may also suggest methods to conserve water for crops when needed.
Moreover, all researchers in this field should come out with a solution to advise federal and provincial governments on this national cause of immense importance.
These efforts will help improve crops and also our economic growth.
