Man sentenced to life in jail for murder during robbery

KARACHI: A model court on Friday awarded life imprisonment to a convict for killing a man during an armed robbery in 2009.

The accused, Tanveer Ahmed, was found guilty of killing 29-year-old Waseemullah, when he was returning home after drawing cash from an automated teller machine on Rafiqui Shaheed Road near Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre within the remit of the Frere police station.

On Friday, additional district and sessions judge Kamran Atta Soomro of the model criminal trial court (South) pronounced his judgement reserved earlier af ter recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge wrote that the prosecution had successfully established the charges against the accused.

The judge sentenced the convict to life imprisonment and also ordered him to payRs100,000 in compensation to legal heirs of the victim.

On default, he would undergo an additional imprisonment for six months.

During the trial, the accused denied the allegations and contended that police constable Shah Nawaz had once snatched his licensed pistol and collected Rs10,000 bribe, but did not return his gun.

He further contended that they quarrelled over the matter and due to grudge PC Shah Nawaz had framed him in the present case.

State prosecutor Arif Sitai argued that the allegations of the accused person were false and the prosecution had strong material available on record to connect the accused with the commission of the alleged of fence.

A case under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 397 (robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered on the complaint of the victim`s brother Inamullah.
