Playing with fire

2025-05-04
THIS is with reference to the report `Truck runs over, kills two in Cattle Colony` (May 1). As is often the case, the driver fled the scene, leaving behind his heavy vehicle on the road.

The burning of such vehicles cannot be supported, but when no concrete action is taken against them by the government, the lack of action itself becomes an act of playing with fire.

Instead of taking due action against reckless dumper and tanker drivers, thegovernment recently arrested a politician for raising the matter. In fact, the Sindh government, not realising at all the sentiments of the people, even invited truck drivers to a Sindh Assembly session, where a senior leader of the ruling party embraced the leader as a token of friendship.

The merciless killing of innocent people in Karachi has continued unabated, with the government apparently waiting for the sky to fall.

The Sindh government would do well to remember the Bushra Zaidi incident that rocked Karachi in the early 1980s in which the college girl was crushed under the wheels, and the army had to be called in to control the riots that had erupted in its wake.

In the current atmosphere, when Pakistan is at the crossroads of political instability and financial difficulty, with foreign cricketers in Karachi for Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, and with India raising the temperature in the region, we cannot afford another such situation.

Therefore, the saner elements within the provincial political domain should wake up, take control and avert any unpleasant incident happening in the city.
