BAJAUR/LAKKI MARWAT: Four personnel were injured as terrorists attacked a police station in Bajaur tribal district on Monday night.

However, the police repulsed a terrorist attack on a police station in Bannu district. Police officials in Bajaur said that a group of terrorists targeted the police station in Laghari area of Mamund tehsil with multiple weapons, including hand grenades, submachine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, at around 11:30pm.

They said personnel from the police station responded swiftly, thwarting the attack. The officials, however, said four policemen were wounded in an intense exchange of fire that lasted several minutes.

They said that SHO Fazal Rehman and personnel Shakir Khan, Toor Sam and Mohammad Hassan suffered injuries. The officials said that the injured were immediately taken to the district headquarters hospital in Khar.

DPO Waqas Rafique confirmed the attack and said that policeman Mohammad Hassan was referred to a Peshawar hospital on Tuesday afternoon due to `unstable condition.

He said that the condition of the other three policemen was stated to be stable. He visited the affected police station and district headquarters hospital to inquire after the injured policemen.

However, it was not known whether any assailant was injured or killed in the exchange of fire. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Interior minister Mohsin Naqvi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfikar Hameed condemned the attack.

In separate statements, they lauded the policemen for fighting against terrorists with great courage and bravery, adding that such attacks would not deter the unwavering courage of policemen.

Meanwhile, the police repulsed a terrorist attack on the Miryan police station in Bannu district late on Monday night. A police official said that the attack took place at around 1:20am as the terrorists surrounded the police station and opened fire on the personnel. He said that the assailants used light and heavy weapons in the multi-pronged attack in a bid to `take the building`s control.

The official said the policemen returned the attack effectively, while the fierce gun battle continued for one hour. He said that the attackers changed their strategy several times to overrun the police installation, but they failed in their attempt.

The official said that all personnel deployed at the police station remained unhurt in the exchange of fire. He said that an effective police response forced assailants to flee, leaving behind traces of blood showing that they suffered injuries in the gunfight.

`After the attack, a large contingent led by DPO Saleem Abbas Kulachi reached the venue and launched a search for assailants,` he said. The official said the police also used drones to detect the movement of terrorists and trace their hideouts.

Bannu regional police officer Sajjad Khan lauded personnel for thwarting the terrorist attack and said the regional police were fully prepared and vigilant to counter terrorism and protect public life and property. `Terrorists can`t shake our[police`s] strong resolve through such dastardly attacks,` he said.
