ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) on Sunday confiscated and destroyed 160 kilograms of unhygienic meat.

According to an IFA official, a vehicle was stopped and inspected on Golra Road. “It was found to contain stinking meat, which was confiscated and later destroyed,” he said.

Deputy District Food Officer Dr Tahira Siddique, in a statement, said the meat also lacked a clear slaughterhouse stamp.

“The standard operating procedures regarding meat storage and temperature maintenance were also violated. We have decided to make the supply of such meat impossible in the federal capital,” she said. Authorities said surprise inspections of vehicles carrying meat would be conducted on a daily basis.

It is worth mentioning that last month, the IFA seized approximately 1,000 kilograms of donkey meat from a farmhouse in Tarnol.

Over 50 donkeys were also confiscated during a raid on the premises, and a foreign national was taken into custody on the spot.

Authorities believed the meat was being prepared for supply to foreign restaurants and individuals. In response to the incident, the Jamiatul Quresh Meat Welfare Association renewed its longstanding demand for the establishment of a regulated slaughterhouse in the capital.
