Another ANP showdown in Swabi likely

By Muqaddam Khan 2013-11-04
SWABI, Nov 3: Members of Awami National Party`s membership committee warned here on Sunday that those former parliamentarians and leaders who had been opposing them would lose their place in the party if they did not stop practices to weaken the party.

Arshad Khan is the chairman of the committee and its members include former provincial minister Sitara Ayaz, former district information secretary Mohammad Rashid advocate, Mohammad Ishfaq, Iqbal Jadoon, Sardar Mohammad and Ameer Hassan.

Insiders said that it seemed the ANP leaders in Swabi district were heading for another showdown, which could further weaken the party`s position in the district.

They observed that if the party leaders failed to accommodate each other`s views it would have a negative impact on the workers who were ignored during the ANP`s five-year government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They said that some of the activists had said that the committee was not acceptable to them.

`All those who say that the membership drive committee is not acceptable to them are wrong as this is against the party norms. We strongly oppose such approach because we are nominated by the party leadership. We have decided that those opposing the committee should bow their heads to the party decision in order to confirm their membership,` said Mr Rashid.

In the previous membership drive the rivalry among ANP leaders had reached such a point that it led to separation of some key leaders, which hit the party to the core.

Hinting at the expulsion of Senator Azam Hoti, the committee members said that his political career was linked with Wali Bagh leadership and those opposed to Asfandyar Wali Khan could face expulsion.

They said that they were the followers of Khan Abdul Ghaffar and all those leaders who adopted a different path were shown the door. They said that in the present scenario there was a need for unity to rejuvenate the party and restore its position in tribal region and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Meanwhile, leaders of Pakistan Coalition for Education (PCE) in a meeting here on Sunday said that if they failed to lure the deprived children to acquire education it would have worst impact on the society in future.

Amjid Ali, PCE district coordinator, said that there was a need to conduct a fresh survey to know the exact number of out of school children by formulating a strategy on the basis of acquired data and brining such children to educational institutions from next academic year, starting from April 1.

Other PCE representatives said that they would support the deprived children and that they had planned to meet their parents to tell them about the importance of knowledge.
