KPEC arrests academician for corruption

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission on Thursday arrested noted academician and chairman of the Department of Physics at the Islamia College University Dr Naeem Khalid on multiple charges of misuse of authority and corrupt practices.

Dr Naeem, who had done PhD from the Cambridge University, will be produced before an Ehtesab court today (Friday) for physical remand.

In a news release issued here, the KPEC alleged that Dr Naeem was involved in the alleged illegal appointments and misappropriation of funds during the procurement of equipment for own department.

An official of the commission told Dawn that Dr Naeem had illegally appointed lecturers to his department.

He added that around 300 computers were purchased for the laboratory in the department in which the suspect had misappropriated funds.

However, a staff member of the Islamia College University rejected the claim as baseless and insisted different agencies had already cleared Dr Naeem of such charges.

He said the National Accountability Bureau had called and questioned Dr Naeem on the issue and got satisfactory reply from the latter and afterwards, the governor`s inspection team and the chief minister`s inspection team probed the allegations and found them to be false.

The staff member said Dr Naeem was a noted academician and had also served in the Higher Education Commission and that he had been falsely implicated in the case.

REFERENCEFILED:The NAB, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has filed a reference with the accountability court against former superintendent of the erstwhile Peshawar Municipal Corporation Mohammad Munir on the charge of possessing Rs34.5 million illegal asset s.

In the reference, the NAB alleged that the suspect had acquired assets in the names of his wife and children.

It said the suspect was appointed to the PMC in 1988 and during his service, there he had acquired those properties, which were disproportionate to the known sources of his income.

The NAB alleged that the suspect had purchased plots and houses in different areas of the provincial capital, including Hayatabad Township and Gulbahar. It added that the suspect also possessed a new modern car registered in his own name.

The suspect was arrested fewmonthsago.Aftercompletion of investigation, the NAB had filed a reference against him.-Bureau Report
