THATTA: Mirpur Bathoro town witnessed an abrupt shutdown when several hundred people outraged over the town police`s refusal to register an FIR of a road accident took to the streets and surrounded the police station on Thursday evening.
The situation turned tense when a car crushed two children, Mahtab, 3, and Jeeju, 6, to death in Shorai mohallah and the police turned away their father, Hanif Jatoi, who tried his best to lodge the FIR against the errant driver.
Scores of people had already gathered at the scene of the accident and accompanied Mr Jatoi when he proceeded to the police station to lodge the FIR against an underage youth who, they claimed, was driving the car.
A man, Bashir Tharani, came to the police station to claim that it was actually he who was driving the car.
However, Mr Jatoi and the witnesses to the accident kept insisting that it was an underage driver, who must be booked.
Mirpur Bathoro town committee vice chairman Mohammed Siddique Suho also joined in the people.
Within the next hour, shopkeepers pulled down the shutters and groups of protesters took to the streets demanding arrest of the unknown errant driver.
Sensing the danger of the situation getting worse, the police agreed to oblige Mr Jatoi.
The protesters later dispersed peacefully and normality returned to the town.
