APROPOS the article `The coup trap` (Oct 29). I would like to highlight a sentence towards the end of the well-argued and well-presented article .`Flawed as they all are, the PTI, PML-N, PPP and MQM represent reasonable political choice. Add in the rise of new parties or new leaderships and it would look f airly competitive. A degree of political selfcleansing may become possible.
Because of its narrow base, the MQM remained confined to urban Sindh at the best of times, thus categorizing it along with other national-level parties seems inappropriate.
Also, with the rebirth of PTI being somewhat recent, there is not much chance of immediate leadership succession in it.
As for the PML-N and the PPP, leadership change could only bring in Maryam Safdar or Shahbaz Sharif on the one hand and Bilawal Bhutto on the other. And what good this would do is anyone`s guess.
The PPP and the PML-N have beenaround for a few decades, thus any hope of a self-cleansing mechanism coming into play seems a bit f ar-fetched. In f act --the owners of-both parties are likely to reinforce their grip by giving themselves constitutional cover.
A caretaker government conducting reforms to ensure fresh blood and honest and dedicated parliamentarians is the only hope for the country.
